Crimson Desert PS5 Review: The First 8 Hours of Beauty, Brutality, and Mild Emotional Damage

March 27, 2026 by whiskey7seven Leave a Comment

There’s a special kind of optimism that comes with booting up a brand-new open-world RPG. It’s the same optimism you have when ordering a “light” whiskey pour at a dive bar—technically possible, but you already know how this ends.

Enter Crimson Desert on the PlayStation 5—a game that promises sweeping landscapes, visceral combat, and a story with actual emotional weight. After spending the first 8 hours in its world, I can confidently say: it delivers… and then occasionally kicks you in the teeth just to make sure you’re paying attention.

Let’s break it down, Whiskey 7 Seven style.

First Impressions: “Oh… This Is Gorgeous”

The opening moments of Crimson Desert are the gaming equivalent of walking into a high-end whiskey bar—dim lighting, rich atmosphere, and you immediately feel underdressed.

The world is stunning. Not “pretty for a game” stunning—actually stunning. Rolling hills, war-torn villages, weather systems that seem borderline emotional. You’ll spend your first hour doing what every gamer does in a new open world:

– Walking slowly

– Rotating the camera like you’re filming a documentary

– Wondering if you’re supposed to feel this inadequate

Optimism level: High.

Frame rate: Surprisingly stable.

Ego: Already humbled.

Combat: Controlled Chaos (Heavy on the Chaos)

Combat in Crimson Desert is where things get spicy—and by spicy, I mean “you will absolutely get wrecked while trying to look cool.”

The system blends:

– Weighty melee combat

– Cinematic finishing moves

– A surprising amount of physics-based “did I mean to do that?” moments

At its best, you feel like a medieval action hero. At its worst, you feel like a guy who picked a bar fight and immediately regretted it.

There’s a learning curve here. Not a gentle slope—more like a cliff with a sarcastic sign at the top that says, “Good luck.”

But once it clicks? Oh man. It clicks.

Story & Characters: Surprisingly Not Just Background Noise

Let’s be honest—most open-world stories are something you tolerate between sword swings.

Not here.

Within the first 8 hours, Crimson Desert actually makes you care. Characters have weight. Dialogue has purpose. And your choices feel like they might actually matter (which is both exciting and mildly stressful).

There’s a grounded tone to the narrative—less “chosen one saves the world” and more “life is messy, now deal with it.”

Which, frankly, feels refreshing.

Exploration: Beautiful, Brutal, and Slightly Rude

Exploring the world is a mix of awe and quiet frustration.

You’ll find:

– Hidden camps

– Dynamic events

– Random encounters that absolutely do not care about your current health bar

And just when you think you’ve got things under control, the game gently reminds you that you do not.

Fast travel? Sure.

Safety? Not so much.

But that unpredictability is part of the charm. It keeps you engaged in a way that many modern games—bless their hand-holding hearts—don’t.

Performance on PS5: Holding It Together (Mostly)

Running on the PS5, Crimson Desert performs better than expected for a game this ambitious.

– Load times are quick enough to keep immersion intact

– Visual fidelity is consistently impressive

– Occasional hiccups? Yes—but nothing that ruins the experience

It’s not flawless, but it’s far from the disaster we’ve come to expect from large-scale releases.

Low bar? Maybe.

Pleasant surprise? Absolutely.

The Honest Truth After 8 Hours

Here’s the deal: Crimson Desert is not trying to be easy, and it’s definitely not trying to please everyone.

It’s:

– Challenging

– Immersive

– Occasionally frustrating

– Genuinely rewarding

And that combination is exactly why it works.

You’ll get knocked down, question your decisions, and absolutely lose fights you thought you had in the bag.

And then you’ll come back for more—because when it works, it’s something special.

Final Verdict (So Far)

After 8 hours, Crimson Desert feels like a game with real ambition—and just enough rough edges to keep you humble.

Pros:

– Stunning world design

– Deep, satisfying combat (once it clicks)

– Engaging story and characters

Cons:

– Steep learning curve

– Occasional performance hiccups

– Combat can feel chaotic early on

Closing Thoughts

There’s a moment in every great game where you realize you’re not just playing it—you’re in it. Crimson Desert hits that moment early… and then immediately tests whether you deserve to stay.

It’s not perfect. It’s not always fair. But it’s absolutely worth your time.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have unfinished business with a group of bandits who clearly didn’t respect the grind.
